Gavin Bryars: Finding a voice For any composer finding a personal mode of expression is a major preoccupation – the perceived imperative to create music that doesn`t sound like that of someone else. In my case this quest was exacerbated by the fact that I moved into music in an informal and unstructured way, almost by accident, as it were.

But ultimately what could be seen as a possible inadequacy becomes a source of strength. The “voice” in one sense is, of course, my own. But I use the term also to refer to the personal qualities of those performers, singers and instrumentalists, with whom I have chosen to work, and through whom I have learned that the essence of composing is to listen at all times to performers, and to find my own “voice” through them.

Gillian Moore: People Like Modern Music Speaking from the perspective of a programmer who has worked in what is inadequately termed `contemporary classical music` for 25 years, Gillian Moore will talk about the profound impact of music which is often thought to be difficult or obscure on audiences who are open for challenging and exciting experiences.

A great deal of energy has been put in to making contemporary classical music acceptable to audiences who habitually attend classical concerts. Gillian Moore will argue that this is a lost cause, and that this energy is mis-directed. There is a huge, curious, adventurous audience out there which is hungry for new experiences, an audience which relishes texture, complexity, experimentation and modernity in music. This audience is not attending symphony concerts. Gillian Moore will use her experience in mounting projects involving the music of Xenakis, Stockhausen, Nono, Ligeti, Bryars, Reich, Ades and Berio as well as collaborative projects with Radiohead, Scott Walker, and musicians from the Warp Record Label including Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and Mira Calix to show how audiences flock gravitate towards programming which is bold and unapologetic, and how they relish connections between musical genres.

She will also talk about how participation in contemporary music, through learning and participation programmes, adds depth, dynamism and context to the performance of contemporary music. Her talk will be illustrated with musical and visual examples.

Jon Wozencroft: Liquid Music Jon Wozencroft will present a rare screening of his film “Liquid Music”, made to the music of Christian Fennesz. The film challenges the notion of the sync between sound and image by providing a parallel and yet sympathetic narrative to the music, also creating a counterpoint to the abstract/instrumental/laptop-generated status of Fennesz`s sound by expressing its meditative, flowing and shape-shifting qualities.

The footage used for the film is, in contrast to the music, free of any processing and post-production, whilst holding a mirror to the digital language of after-effects and virtual environments. It tries to express the sensual in the context of dessicated image-making and post-human conditioning. Wozencroft will talk about the film in relation to his work for Touch, the audiovisual publishing company he started in 1982 as a means of exploring the powerful chemistry between sound and visual media.

Vidar Lande: Ways of thinking in fiddlemusic from Setesdal The presentation will take up some main historical lines of development in fiddlemusic from Setesdal, with a glance to the whole Agder region. Building on personal experience of performing, it will connect this development to intentions and musical thinking of musicians. It will be important to focus on ideological structures in our Western European history of thinking, and point out some essential underlying premisses for the presentation of old traditional fiddle music in Agder. Eivind Buene: There`s joy in repetition The concept of repetition is fundamental to many kinds of music, and has been taken to its extremes both in electronic music and in the american minimal music of the sixties and seventies. In the major discourse of modern art music from the twentieth century, however, use of repetition has been restricted. So what happens when you merge the instrumental sound materials from the modern avant-garde with the idea of looping?
