Stian Westerhus

Stian Westerhus is a Norwegian guitarist and singer known for his experimental style, exposed with keyboardist Øystein Moen in the bands Jaga Jazzist and Puma and in collaborations with musicians like Sidsel Endresen, Nils Petter Molvær, Arve Henriksen, Jan Bang and Ingar Zach. Westerhus holds a bachelor in jazz from Middlesex University under Stuart Hall, and a master from the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium.

He was first recognised by a broader audience in the experimental jazz band Puma, with whom he released four albums. The soloalbum Pitch Black Star Spangled (2010) and the duo album Didimoy Dreams with Sidsel Endresen earned Westerhus international recognition.

With his new album Amputation, Stian Westerhus has shown himself once again to be a man obsessed with the possibilities of noise and melody, the vulnerability of the artificial versus the indomitable spirit of the flesh. It’s a tone poem for a post-technological age, but more importantly, it’s a difficult album that’s strangely easy to listen to.
